Article: Finding Your Purpose In Life

Finding Your Purpose In Life

Finding Your Purpose In Life

The Project J Christian Journaling Paper Products Bible

I get asked these questions a lot. What am I here on Earth for? What’s my purpose?

The truth is… I asked myself that a lot, too.

This is perhaps the biggest question in life. What are we here for?

To answer that, we first need to accept that we are created beings. We don’t just appear out of nowhere, or move and bend circumstances with our wills. We were created by a Creator, a Supreme Being. And if so, that Creator must have a purpose in creating us.

I think deep inside of all us is a need for significance - to know that we are needed and of value - regardless where we are or what work we are doing.

The answer might be straightforward and simple - it might not be what you’re looking for, you might not be satisfied with it, but trust me, I’ve spent years searching for that answer, too. And I’ve come back to this same point, over and over again.

Isaiah 43:7
“… everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”

Created for His glory.
We are created FOR God’s glory.
We exist to glorify God, to display His glory so that He can be made known and praised.

It makes sense when you think about how God created us. He created us in His image so that we can reflect it - display His glory, make Him known, and bring Him praise.

This is why the New Testament again and again calls us to do all things unto His glory. Whether we eat or drink or whatever else we do, do them all unto the glory of God (1 Cor 10:31). Let our light so shine before men that they may see our good deeds and give glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

In light of this truth, may I suggest that our ultimate purpose has never changed? We were created in God’s image to give Him glory.

Therefore, instead of asking what our purpose in life is, perhaps a ‘better’ question might be: How can we fulfil our purpose here?

How can we give God glory?

How can we display God’s glory in every season of our lives?

Thought it would be fun and helpful to explore some buzzwords together, and share some practical steps on how we can bring Him glory as we journey through life and dreams!

1. Calling - the #1 buzzword.

This word is often thrown about in the Christian/church environment. Big buzzword. But what exactly is ‘calling’?

To put it simply, calling is what we do to give God glory.

Some good questions to ask as you discover what you can do to give God glory:
- What does your heart beat for?
- What makes you come alive?
- What do you enjoy doing and are good at?
- What are your skills, talents, and strengths?

Don’t worry about trying to figure it all out in one day. Our calling may change with the seasons. Let it happen. Don’t be too caught up in trying to find that ONE calling - remember, the goal is to bring God glory in whatever you do.

Seek wise counsel, talk to trusted friends and authority figures, and surround yourself with a faithful and godly community. Most importantly, pray and seek God. He is your Creator and He knows you best - your skills, talents, strength, weaknesses, and future.

Go ahead and meditate on Psalm 139! ◡̈

2. Seasons - another buzzword.

There is a time for everything. Spring, summer, autumn, winter. There is a cycle, and the cycle never stops - seasons will keep changing. Much like the nature, we, too, have seasons. May we not envy the mountain-highs of someone else’s life, but seek to enjoy our current season.

Stay faithful in the now, in the little.
Do not despise the day of small beginnings.
Be a good steward of your present and resources.

Don’t feel bad about rest and slowing down - because there will come a time when you’ve got to pick up the pace and run with whatever God has called you to do. God uses the decisions we make in one season to prepare us for things we don’t even know we’d need in the next!

So take a step back, chill, and embrace and enjoy your current season - while it lasts!

3. Commit your plans to the Lord.

Give it to God. Commit. Transfer your plans to Him. If God has called you to something, there will be alignment, confirmation, opportunities, divine moments, and provisions. More often than not, it’s not about you having the perfect plans and building the dream, but its about God building YOU - He is after your heart. Lean in and trust Him fully.

Let Him have your plans, let Him have your heart.

4. Build your relationship with God.

Old but gold: read your bible. Read God’s love letters to you. In it lies all the instructions for life and success. Your relationship with Jesus is the only relationship that is eternal - cultivate the habit of communion with Him. He is the BEST partner you can ever have - for everything.

John 14:26 - But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things.

You have the best Teacher - enjoy the learning process!

-

As you seek your own answers to ‘What is my purpose in life?’, may you find that He is the only purpose you need. May you know that He is the only Reward and Fulfilment in life. ◡̈
